Athlete Participation Programme
The Athlete Participation programme was introduced in 2002, with the aim of assisting Athletes from developing sailing nations with Travel Costs and Entry Fees for certain ISAF Events, as well as providing coaching expertise during the event.
In its inaugural year, the Athlete Participation Programme supported entrants
taking part in the ISAF World Sailing Games. 38 sailors from 12 different countries benefited from the programme.
In 2003, the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship was held on the Island of Madeira, Portugal, and ISAF funded 11 sailors from 9 different countries.
Gydnia, Poland hosted the Volvo Youth Sailing World Championship in 2004 and the success of this programme continued with 29 sailors from 14 countries taking advantage of the funding available, including Latvia and Cuba who were both participating for the first time.
The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2005, takes place in Busan, Korea and ISAF has offered funding to 21 sailors from 11 countries.
In 2004, ISAF introduced the Long Term Funding Programme which enables developing countries to plan and prepare for future Youth Worlds knowing that funding will be available to them at least one year in advance.
